As the duo arrived in Bikini Bottom, King Neptune execute Mr. Krabs, but is being stalled by Mindy. 'Traffic light' artists paint a brighter future

(CNN) -- On the busy streets of Cape Town a group of artists dodge traffic and evade the police as they try to sell their work.

For these Zimbabwean immigrants the "robots," South African slang for traffic lights, are the marketplace where they try and eke out a living.

"Robots" in South Africa are a common place for township entrepreneurs to hawk their wares to passing motorists. But drivers are more used to being offered sunglasses or earmuffs than works of art.

The artists who sell at the traffic lights each have their own story of hope and survival, many choosing to come to Cape Town for better work opportunities and living conditions.

"I came from Zimbabwe in 2007 to get away from the political and economical problems that make life hard there," explained 24-year-old artist Alex Makumbe.

"In Zimbabwe it's tough to earn a living. There were no jobs," said Lawson Matthew, another young artist living in Cape Town.

The artists say they have to trade at traffic lights because they can't find anywhere else in the city to sell their work. They explain that setting up a market stall is difficult for them and competition for spots is tight.

But despite their daily struggle each artist carries on to support their family and send money back home.

Many of the artists taught themselves how to paint when they saw it was a way they could make money. Matthew says he learnt how to create the township art from his brother.

"I use soft drink tins, small nails, enamel gloss paint for the background and activities painted in the front," he said.

"Sometimes I use sand to create textures for the roads and I really like my backgrounds -- mountains, trees and sky," he continued.

The township paintings depict typical scenes in Cape Town, often featuring the city's prominent Table Mountain landmark in the background. The pictures sell by size, ranging from $25 to $90.

These unique and colorful paintings caught the eye of one passerby who stopped to chat to the artists at an intersection.

Xenia Forrester and her husband Mark decided to extend a helping a hand to the street artists after hearing about the difficulties they faced while trying to sell their work.

"The artists work hard, struggle a lot and really want to make a better life for themselves and their families," said Forrester.

"It is difficult to sell, especially when people are not in a good mood," Matthew said. "We face constant rejection and even people being rude."

"It's also dangerous running in and out of traffic," he continued.

It's not just cars that the artists need to watch out for -- they are also at risk of being arrested by the police and having their work confiscated.

"Some people shout at us, rainy conditions make it hard to sell and can damage the paintings and police chase us for selling at the robots," explained Makumbe.

Forrester says it is hard not to be drawn in by the bright and colorful paintings and hopes the website will generate more business for the group.

But creating the art in their homes can be a challenge. Conditions are often cramped and power cuts force the artists to work by candlelight. African Cartel has plans to eventually set up a creative workshop space where the artists can work from, share ideas and gain inspiration.

And the artists too have big plans. Matthew says he wants to be just like Picasso and Makumbe hopes to take his creative abilities online and do a web graphics and design course. For now at least, it's green lights ahead for the Robot Artists.

While a million bucks really isn’t much when you look at NASA spending, it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. The project would also require financing for the actual operation systems, which they say could cost tens of millions of dollars.

Apparently, this space junk laser concept could clear out about 10 pieces of space trash a day, making it much safer for future manned-missions and all the running equipment we have floating around up there now. Also, to avoid international tensions, the team suggests the project be a collaboration between several nations. I guess they don’t want anyone to think they’re planning a new laser weapons system.

Observers became concerned about the plane's ability to stop as it continued its ground roll, but the A320 finally came to rest just 1,000 ft (305 m) short of the end of the runway. The rest of the plane remained undamaged, however, and no one aboard the A320 was injured during the landing.

Although the A320 family has an excellent safety record overall, a Canadian report released in 2004 documented 67 cases of nose landing gear failures aboard the A320 series worldwide since 1989. At least seven cases involved the nose gear becoming locked at a 90° angle as occurred on JetBlue Flight 292. The A320 has never been grounded as a result of these accidents because none has resulted in injury and Airbus has made several improvements to the nose gear design.

Depending on fuel storage configuration, the KC-135 can carry up to 83,000 pounds (37,648 kilograms) of cargo.

In Southeast Asia, KC-135 Stratotankers made the air war different from all previous aerial conflicts. Midair refueling brought far-flung bombing targets within reach. Combat aircraft, no longer limited by fuel supplies, were able to spend more time in target areas.

Background
AMC manages more than 530 total aircraft inventory Stratotankers, of which the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard fly 295 of those in support of AMC's mission.

The Boeing Company's model 367-80 was the basic design for the commercial 707 passenger plane as well as the KC-135A Stratotanker. In 1954 the Air Force purchased the first 29 of its future 732-plane fleet. The first aircraft flew in August 1956 and the initial production Stratotanker was delivered to Castle Air Force Base, Calif., in June 1957. The last KC-135 was delivered to the Air Force in 1965.

Of the original KC-135A's, more than 410 have been modified with new CFM-56 engines produced by CFM-International. The re-engined tanker, designated either the KC-135R or KC-135T, can offload 50 percent more fuel, is 25 percent more fuel efficient, costs 25 percent less to operate and is 96 percent quieter than the KC-135A.

Under another modification program, 157 Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard tankers were re-engined with the TF-33-PW-102 engines. The re-engined tanker, designated the KC-135E, is 14 percent more fuel efficient than the KC-135A and can offload 20 percent more fuel.

Through the years, the KC-135 has been altered to do other jobs ranging from flying command post missions to reconnaissance. RC-135s are used for special reconnaissance and Air Force Material Command's NKC-135A's are flown in test programs. The Air Combat Command operates the OC-135 as an observation platform in compliance with the Open Skies Treaty.

Over the next few years, the aircraft will undergo upgrades to expand its capabilities and improve its reliability. Among these are improved communications, navigation and surveillance equipment to meet future civil air traffic control needs.

F-35 does first mid-air refueling over North Texas

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Forth Worth said today that its new F-35 Lighting II fighter jet successfully completed its first ever mid-air refueling in a flight over North Texas on Wednesday.

It was just the 34th flight for the new plane, which is scheduled to be delivered to the first customers in 2010.

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 13, 2008 - The Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] F-35 Lightning II successfully completed the first stage of its airborne refueling tests during the aircraft's 34th flight yesterday. Aerial refueling capability will expand the F-35 operating envelope enabling longer duration flights. The milestone is another in a series leading to first production deliveries in 2010.

"Our progress on the F-35 program remains strong. The F-35 is flying and proving its value every day," said Dan Crowley, Lockheed Martin executive vice president and F-35 program general manager. "The F-35B, the first short takeoff/vertical landing aircraft, is on plan for a mid-2008 first flight. All 19 test aircraft are in manufacturing flow or on the flight line and assembly is under way on the first two production aircraft, which are on schedule for delivery to the U.S. Air Force in 2010."

A specially instrumented KC-135 tanker from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., is deployed to Fort Worth to support the refueling missions, which will continue over the next two weeks.

"We've known since our first flight in 2006 that the F-35 is extraordinarily stable and controllable, and we've conducted extensive ground testing on the aerial refueling equipment, so it was no surprise that the tests today went smoothly," Crowley said. The tests are designed to evaluate and confirm the operation of the aerial refueling system, procedures and aircraft handling qualities, and are being conducted from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. headquarters in Fort Worth.

On Wednesday's flight, Beesley climbed to 20,000 feet and performed a series of maneuvers to verify the F-35's compatibility with the KC-135's refueling boom and its aerodynamic wake. The sortie also evaluated aircraft systems and handling while connected to the refueling boom. All systems functioned as designed. Beesley reported that the F-35's flight control system provided excellent handling qualities near the tanker, and while connected to the tanker refueling boom.

The Lightning II was aloft for one hour and 34 minutes and completed multiple tanker engagements. "The test team is completely satisfied we can maneuver in the vicinity of the KC-135, and the tanker boom can easily connect with the F-35," said Doug Pearson, Lockheed Martin vice president of the F-35 Integrated Test Force. "We will begin to evaluate the F-35 fuel system during the next refueling test mission by transferring various amounts of fuel from the tanker."

The F-35 carries a prodigious amount of internal fuel - more than 18,000 pounds - giving it exceptionally long range without external tanks, and dramatically reducing its need for tanker support. The internal-fuel configuration enables the Lightning II to remain stealthy by avoiding external tank carriage typically used by legacy fighters to extend range. Drop tanks reflect radar energy and can betray an aircraft's location. Operating without drop tanks also frees more stations for external weapons carriage when stealth is not required to fulfill mission objectives.

As the program progresses, international-participant support remains strong. The Netherlands Cabinet recently made a recommendation to Parliament to approve the procurement of two aircraft for operational test and evaluation. The United Kingdom and Italy also are in the process of making decisions on the procurement of test aircraft. All partner nations have parts or systems flying on the first Lightning II.

The F-35 is a supersonic, multi-role, 5th generation stealth fighter designed to replace a wide range of existing aircraft, including AV-8B Harriers, A-10s, F-16s, F/A-18 Hornets and United Kingdom Harrier GR.7s and Sea Harriers.

Lockheed Martin is developing the F-35 with its principal industrial partners, Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. Two separate, interchangeable F-35 engines are under development: the Pratt & Whitney F135 and the GE Rolls-Royce Fighter Engine Team F136.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. Quiet Rockland of Rockland County, New York is enraged over the callous criminal disregard for safety and human life demonstrated by Southwest Airlines (NYSE: “LUV”) and the FAA. We call for: (1) a nationwide traveler and consumer boycott of Southwest, and (2) a federal criminal investigation of Southwest and “failed regulator” FAA to be spear-headed by the United States Attorney General and a special prosecutor.

The persons that should be flying Southwest at this point, should be only those referred by Doctor Kevorkian. Although the depraved Southwest spin-machine audaciously ‘assures’ us Southwest’s six (6) cracked-fuselage aircraft were “never a safety problem”, Southwest should tell that to the victims of the 1988 Aloha Airlines disaster. There, metal fatigue on an aging Boeing 737 caused 18 feet of fuselage to be ripped off the plane causing grievous injuries and loss of life. House Transportation Committee Chairman James Oberstar in his press conference Saturday, posted on “www.cspan.org”, presented detailed evidence incriminating Southwest and “Bobby” Sturgell’s failed FAA. The incriminating events occurred while “Bobby” Sturgell was Deputy Administrator and Acting Administrator of the FAA. On Saturday, Representative Oberstar thereupon rightfully excoriated the aero-perps for their long-standing “tombstone mentality”. Although criminal and morally reprehensible, and now apparent after a many-month detailed Congressional investigation, Southwest and FAA are clearly in the insalubrious business of making those tombstones happen, in addition to simply reacting to those tombstones post facto.

As recently as last year, Southwest Airlines, with the complicity of supposed federal regulator FAA, on at least 47 of Southwest’s Boeing 737 aircraft, on between 1,451 and 60,000 flights, over a period of two-and-one-half years, deliberately put approximately 200,000 or more unsuspecting travelers in harm’s way - making them fly in un-inspected, non-compliant, aged, and in some cases fuselage-cracked commercial aircraft. Southwest knew the names and faces of their potential victims. Southwest gladly took their money, and for that matter at this point Southwest owes each of them at least a rebate in full of their ticket prices. This was not mere negligence. Irrespective of what forensic lesser charge might technically ultimately apply once further Congressional investigation concludes, the acts and omissions of Southwest and collaborator FAA were tantamount to attempted murder, on a massive scale.

This WILL not stand.

Quiet Rockland asks and encourages those Southwest employees tired of subscribing to their company’s tombstone culture, to leave their sinking airship now to find other and better employ at a responsible airline that actually acknowledges the dignity of the individual human traveler. We further ask every American consumer to now act in solidarity - cancel all flights and other business with Southwest – boycott the airline which we today re-name “Air Kevorkian” - and just say “No” to Southwest, to FAA, and to the greed of the aeromercantile complex that continually and habitually puts profits over people’s lives.

And, as to Southwest stockholders? Vote your conscience.

Sukhoi Su-35 multi-role fighter

On the world fighter market Russia’s Sukhoi is pinning its hopes, in the near future, on a substantially modernized Su-35 multi-role fighter. The model must be an interim type between today’s Su-30MK in various configurations and a prospective fifth-generation fighter, whose deliveries may start in the second half of the next decade. The Su-35 is a 4++ generation aircraft employing technologies of the fifth generation. They make it superior to all other 4th generation fighters now under development worldwide. In 2009-2015, thanks to these technologies, the Su-35 will dominate the world market, outperforming other proposed multi-role fighters.

The first experimental Su-35, completed in summer 2007 at Komsomolsk-na-Amure Aviation Production Association (KnAAPO) first appeared at Russia’s MAKS-2007 air show.

A new aircraft with an old name

The Su-35 has long been a brand name in the aviation world. Since 1992, an export version of the Su-27 fighter (created under the order of the Russian Air Force) has been demonstrated at international air shows. At the turn of the millennium, Su-35 fighters participated in the tenders of Korean and Brazilian air forces. By the mid-decade of the new century, a general concept emerged of a considerably modified Su-27 fighter, which retained the name of Su-35.

What is new in the Su-35? First off, the fighter will get an improved airframe, which will dramatically increase its service life to 6,000 hours, 30 years of operation (the time before the first test and recondition and the between-repairs period has been increased to 1,500 hours, or 10 years of operation). Aerodynamically it is similar to the Su-27. But unlike the Su-30MKI it will feature no canard fins. All the three channels will have electrically signaled control without mechanical cabling. The use of a new integrated control system (developed by MNPK Avionika Moscow-based Research and Production Association) simultaneously performing functions of several systems – remote control, automatic control, limiting signals system, air signals system, chassis wheels braking system – will enhance the fighter’s handling capability and maneuverability.

Among the Su-35 design features, worth of note is the absence of an overhead brake flap, a standard characteristic of the Su-27. Its functions are performed by an active rudder. The Su-35 chassis has been reinforced because of the increased takeoff and landing weight of the aircraft. For the same reason, the front bearing has two wheels. The improved radar stealth reduces the reflectance of the Su-35 in the X radio waveband and in the angle range of ±60°.

The “heart” of the aircraft

Another important difference of the Su-35 from predecessors from the Su-27 family is the use, in its power plant, of new engines with an increased thrust. Those engines, known as 117S, have been developed by NPO Saturn Research and Production Association.

In terms of engineering, the engines are substantially modified AL-31F production engines employing fifth-generation technologies. They use a new fan, new high and low pressure turbines, and a new digital control system. A provision is made for using a vectored thrust nozzle. The modernization has increased the engine special mode thrust by 16%, up to 14,500 kgf. In the maximum burner-free mode it reaches 8,800 kgf. Compared to today’s AL-31F engines, their capabilities will grow substantially, by 2 to 2.7 times. For instance, the between-repair period will grow from 500 to 1,000 hours (the operating period before the first overhaul is 1,500 hours). The designed period will vary between 1,500 and 4,000 hours.

The 117S engines will be co-produced by Ufa-based Motor Building Association and Rybinsk-based NPO Saturn Research and Production Association. The first production 117S engines were delivered to KnAAPO in early 2007 for testing on the first experimental Su-35 aircraft.

New onboard systems

The distinctive feature of Su-35 is the employment of a new suite of onboard instruments. Its core is the information management system (IMS), which integrates functional, logical, informational and software subsystems into a single complex that ensures the interaction between the crew and equipment. The IMS includes two central digital computers, commutation and information devices and an indication system built on the “all-glass cockpit” concept.

The core of the Su-35 cockpit instrumentation suite are two full-color multi-function liquid crystal displays of MFI type, a multi-function panel with a built-in display processor, a wide angle collimatory display on the windshield and a control and indication panel.

MFI multi-function displays with a built-in processor measure 9 x 12 inches (diagonal 15 inches) and have a resolution of 1400x1050 pixels. They are intended for reception, processing and production, in a multiple window mode, of graphic, numeric, alphabetic and symbolic information. They also present televised information received from onboard TV sensors and impose on it synthesized numeric, alphabetic and symbolic information. Besides, they produce and send video signals in a digital format to the video record unit. The multi-function panel with a built-in display processor presents the required information and issues commands by pushing the buttons on the button array at any time in flight. The airborne collimatory display with a built-in processor monitors the space beyond the cockpit. The information is processed by control signals. The collimator angle of view is 20x30о.

The onboard systems and armament in the new cockpit of Su-35 are controlled by buttons and switches on the aircraft control joystick and engine control levers as well as by a button array on multi-function displays. Thus the HOTAS concept is realized on this type of aircraft. The displays and some other avionics systems of Su-35 are developed by Instrument Design Bureau of Ramenskoye and affiliated companies of Tekhnokompleks Research and Production Association.

“Eyes and ears”

The core of the Su-35 armament is a new radar control system with a phased antenna array (Irbis-E). It features unique capabilities in terms of the target detection range. This is a development V V Tikhomirov Research Institute of Instrument Production. In design, this is an X-waveband multi-role radar with a passive phased antenna array (PAA) mounted on a two-step hydraulic drive unit (in azimuth and roll). The antenna device scans by an electronically controlled beam in azimuth and angle of elevation in sectors not smaller than 60°. The two-step electro-hydraulic drive unit additionally turns the antenna by mechanic means to 60° in azimuth and 120° in roll. Thus, in using the electronic control and mechanical additional turn of the antenna, the maximum deflection angle of the beam grows to 120°.

Irbis-E radar control system detects and tracks up to 30 air targets, retaining continuity of space observation and engaging up to eight targets. The system detects, chooses and tracks up to four ground targets in several map-making modes with various resolution at a range of up to 400 km, without stopping to monitor the airspace.

Irbis-E radar detects air targets with an absolute cross section of 3 m2 on a head-on course at a range of up to 400 km.

Being an improvement on radars with a PAA, Irbis has much better capabilities: expanded (by more than twice) operating frequency band, increased from 70о to 120о target detection and tracking zone in azimuth, substantially (by 2-2.5 times) increased effective range, improved anti-jamming capability, etc. In this aspect, Irbis is comparable to the best foreign counterparts, outperforming most of the US- and Wes-European-made radars with passive and active PAA.

The Research Institute has been developing Irbis since 2004. By now, the engineering prototypes of the system have passed the required bench trials. The first of them has been installed on the Su-30MK2 flying laboratory and is undergoing flight tests. The first flight of the flying laboratory with Irbis onboard occurred in early 2007 at Gromov Flight Test Institute. During the flight, the laboratory proved the superior performance of the new radar in the air-to-surface operating mode.

Among other new onboard systems of the Su-35 is modern navigation and radio communication equipment, systems maintaining fighters operation in a formation and a highly efficient electronic countermeasures suite. The component package of the latter and its complementation with specific jamming devices can be determined by the customer.

Armament

In addition to the armaments onboard the modern Su-30MK, it is planned to additionally arm the Su-35 with new types of air-to-air and air-to-surface guided missiles, including long-range types. The maximum ordnance load of the Su-35 is 8,000 kg. This is placed in 12 weapon stations.

Status of the program

Nowadays, the first flying prototype of Su-35 is undergoing ground tests. Its first flight took place on February 19, 2008. Following the first prototype, now on the assembly line of KnAAPO (Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Production Association) are a further two examples of Su-35. Those will join the tests this year. The production and delivery of Su-35s to customers are scheduled for 2010. They will continue with the emergence of a fifth-generation fighter on the market.

The Boeing 747-400 is a four-engine widebody commercial jet airliner

The Boeing 747-400 is a four-engine widebody commercial jet airliner, manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The -400 series is the best-selling model in the successful 747 family.[3] Its most distinguishing feature from the other 747 models are its winglets, although the -400D does not feature any. With seatings for a maximum of 624 people, the 747-400 can fly non-stop for 7,670 nautical miles (14,200 km), depending on model.

The 747-400 is the second-most recent version of the Boeing 747 aircraft, to be superseded by the more economical and advanced Boeing 747-8. The last -400 model was delivered in December 2009.

The 747-400 was announced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in October 1985. Compared to the 747-300 the 747-400 has 6 feet (1.8 m) wing tip extensions, 6 feet (1.8 m) winglets, and a glass cockpit, which dispensed with the need for a flight engineer. The 747-400 also improved on the 300 version with the addition of a fuel tank in the horizontal stabilizer, engines with improved fuel efficiency and higher thrust, an all-new interior, revised fuselage/wing fairings and newer in-flight entertainment. Like the 747-300, the passenger version of the 747-400 has the stretched upper deck (SUD) as a standard feature. The SUD is almost twice as long as the original 747 upper deck. The SUD was previously offered as a retrofit and first appeared on two Japanese 747-100 SR models.[6] While the wingspan was increased, the overall weight of the wings was decreased due to the use of composites and aluminum alloys.

The MD-90 became the third generation of the Douglas twin-jet family, following the highly successful DC-9 and MD-80. The MD-90 was originally envisioned as a high-tech alternative to the earlier designs featuring very fuel efficient engines known as propfans. However, the drop in oil prices of the 1980s resulted in weak interest in these new technology engines, so McDonnell Douglas abandoned them in favor of more conventional turbofan engines.

Otherwise, the MD-90 is largely similar to the MD-80 it replaced, using the same basic fuselage, wing, and flight deck. However, the flight deck was updated with an improved electronic flight instrument system and other avionics plus new environmental control systems, hydraulic systems, and passenger comfort features. In addition, the new V2500 turbofan engines offered much improved fuel efficiency and noise emissions.

Only two versions of the MD-90 entered production, the standard Series 30 and the extended range MD-90-30ER. Smaller Series 10 and lengthened Series 50 variants were also proposed but not developed. Although interest in the MD-90 family was strong, the fate of the design was sealed when McDonnell Douglas was purchased by Boeing.
